Computer,
Photocopying & Printing
Computer-Assisted
Legal Research
Lexis and Westlaw,
the full text computer-assisted legal research (CALR) systems, are
available for law students and faculty. Training in CALR is provided
to all first-year students in the winter term as part of the Legal
Writing program. A Reference Librarian is available to assist users
during Reference hours. Student representatives for both systems keep
regularly scheduled office hours and are also available for assistance. |
The
Computer Lab
Access to the library's
Computer Lab (rooms 304 and 306) is limited to law school and University
of Southern Maine (USM) students, faculty and staff. Use of the PCs
is on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that the computer
lab is maintained and operated by Academic
Computer Services (780-4029) and not by the Law School or Library.
You may report problems to the library staff.
Law students
may also use any of USM's computer labs, including the main facility
located in Luther Bonney Hall. Login is based on UNET (ie, Peoplesoft) Username and Password. |
Electronic
Mail
Law students will
automatically have a USM account for electronic mail and be provided
dial up access to the internet upon request. The Law School will use
this University account for all electronic correspondence If you have
an alternate preferred electronic mail address, please forward your
university account. Click here for directions.
Students with
personal computers and modems at home may access their university
computer account as well as URSUS, Lexis and Westlaw. See one of
the reference librarians for information on phone numbers and modem
settings or contact the USM computer lab at 780-4029. |
Printing
Students, Faculty & staff may print from
any computer lab on campus as well as the public access machines
in the law library for four cents per copy. You must have a balance
on your USMCard, the current rate is four cents per copy. Printing
to the Lexis and Westlaw printers is free for Law Student, Faculty
& Staff.
Law Firms may print from the public access machines on the third floor of the law library with a USMCard. You may obtain your USMcard by completing the online form.
General Public may print
from the public access machines on the third floor of the law library
with a GUESTcard. You may obtain or add value to a GUESTcard from
the CVC unit located on the third floor by the circulation desk.
The card is dispensed for $5.00 and will have a $2.00 balance.

Photocopying
All three photocopiers are located
on the third floor. Two machines are equipped to use the USMCard
or GUESTcard and the other is equipped with a key code pad. Key codes are given to faculty,staff and approved student groups. Firms are encouraged to purchase a USMCard through the online request form due to the ability to cancel and/or transfer balances of lost cards.
Cards purchased through the CVC are generic untraceable cards. Departments may obtain a card one time free of charge through the
Campus Card Office. Firms pay a minimal fee of $3.00.
